How to Identify the Target Audience for Your Book

If you have just started writing your book or have already written half of it, we would like to ask you a few questions. ‘Who are the people you are writing for?’, ‘Do you know the demographics of people who would be willing to buy and read your book?’, ‘How would you find out the target audience for your book?’

If you know the basics, you are on the right track. But if you do not know the answers to these questions, then this article is for you.

Most of the writers think about their readers when they have finished writing the book and they really struggle in choosing the audience to promote their book once it is released and ready to sell.

If you have just started writing a book or you are in the middle of it, it is high time for you to understand whom you are going to sell your book to and how?

To know the primary target audience for your book, you must know:

  • The primary genre of your book and what all books are already famous in this genre. Can you find out the readers of those famous books somehow?
  • The secondary genre of your book (if any), and what all books are based on the same mix of genres. Can you find out their readers and connect with them?
  • Readers of what age group and location would be interested in buying your book and where can you find them?

Once you know your primary target audience here is the two-step process to find them:

Finding the bestselling/ established books in the same genre as yours –

Find out the bestsellers of your genre on e-commerce websites like Amazon or offline retail stores. If you have listed the top 10 books in the same genre, you have won half of the battle.

Finding those books or the author of those books on social media platforms –

Die-hard fans of famous books always actively engage on the social media accounts of the authors. You can connect with them by adding them to your friends or following list. Keep posting actively on your social media accounts to engage them. Do conversate with them to know their preferences. Watch out for what kind of content engages them and be versatile in posting related stuff on your social media handles. Create content that would make them curious to read your book. Finally, share the posts related to your book and persuade the readers to buy your book by offering them discounts or signed copies of your book.

It is important to know your audience before you start writing a book. This would help you mend your writing style and focus on writing in a way the reader would like it to be. The earlier you begin, the more beneficial it would be for your book’s success.
